The Importance of Margins in a Written Document

When you work on a project, obviously content is very important. However, there are other key factors to keep in mind to make your delivery more efficient and powerful.

One of the important elements is the layout of your written content. Formatting text to give it a peculiar and unique style will make your project outstanding and more enjoyable to read. Margins are one of the main elements that improve a long written document. With this in mind, let’s now find out How to Change Margins in Google Docs.

Adjusting Margins in Google Docs

When it comes to adjusting margins in Google Docs, there are a few different options available. However, it’s important to remember that there are no limitations. Whether you’ve been working on desktop or mobile, you’ll easily be able to fix the layout of your project. We’re about to show how to change margins in Google Docs: desktop and mobile.

Google Docs Margins: How to Adjust Them on Desktop

We’ve already mentioned the importance of adjusting the margins in a written document. Google offers two different methods to operate on those margins. You can decide to give a default setup to all the pages of your document, or you can edit them individually.

Google Docs Margins on Desktop: Page Setup

The Page Setup section allows you to control some default parameters of your project. You can open the Page Setup window, simply clicking File on the top menu and then Page Setup.

In the Page Setup panel, you can change the orientation of the pages, the paper size, the page colour and the margins.

After entering the margin values, you’ll be able to apply the changes to the whole document, or to a preselected portion of text. Click OK and your changes will immediately apply.

Google Docs Margins on Desktop: Rulers

If you want to personalise every page of your document individually, instead of using the Page Setup panel, you can simply use the rulers.

If you can’t spot any rulers in your project, you might need to activate them. To do so, click View in the dropdown menu on top of the page. Then, tick Show Ruler.

Two rulers, a vertical and an horizontal one, will appear in your project.

Change the Top and Bottom Margins

At this point, if you want to modify the Top margin (or the Bottom margin), put your cursor on the top (or bottom) of the page and click on that line that separates the grey area of the ruler (on the left) from the white one. A blue line will guide you while changing the margin.

Change Left and Right Indents

If you want to change left and right indents you have to work on the ruler on top of your project.

In this case, all you need to do is select the text that you want to move and drag the blue arrows on the ruler to create indentions.

If you don’t select any text, the indention will be created only on the paragraph where the text cursor is located.

Set margin to 3.25

If you want the indention to only affect the first line of your paragraph, you have to click the blue line on top of the left blue arrow and drag that one left or right.

This way, only the first line of the paragraph where the text cursor is located will move.

If you select more paragraphs, all the first lines of those will move.

Google Docs Margins: How to Adjust Them on Mobile

Google Docs certainly is a platform mainly used on desktop. However, the mobile version of the app offers almost all features included in the desktop one. Among all those functions the one that allows you to adjust margins of a document is only available on iOS.

Google Docs Margins on Mobile: iOS

Changing margins on iOS is very easy. All you need to do is select Page Setup from the menu.

At that point, you’ve got the same options that you had on the desktop app. You can change the orientation of the page, you can change the paper size, the page colours and the margins. Tap this last option to adjust margins.

At this point, a very nice screen shows you the four default margins of your document. You could decide to pick some presets to make margins narrow, wide or customise them to personalise the layout of your project. If you go for this last option, you’ll then be asked to insert the size of the desired margins. Insert them into the proper blanks and apply changes.
