Best 3 Free Career Test for Teens and Adults in 2020

You probably landed on this page after trying to get some clarity on the career exploration tests that are available on the internet. The internet is full of them but there are only a few good career tests for adults and teens. In this article, we used our expertise at Job Wherever to find the best career quiz for you!

In this article:

  • Best free career tests for adults and teens
  • Princeton review career quiz
  • Myers Briggs career test
  • Holland career test

  • How to use career tests to help you choosing your next career step

The characteristics of a good career exploration test

What makes a good career exploration test? Easy, it should ask you the right questions and be able to draw the correct conclusion to give you the career advice you need! I personally think that there are several good options available and I always recommend taking more than one test. This way you can combine the results of the different tests to get a more complete advice.

As you can imagine, a teenager that is taking a career quiz to choose his/her college major will need a different sort of advice than a professional that needs to choose between two different job offers (are you looking for a job? Take a look at our tips on how to make a good CV and cover letter). Don’t worry, in this article I will also suggest which quiz is better for different audiences.

Princeton review career quiz (free)

The Princeton review career quiz is a great tool to help you understand which career would fit you. This career aptitude test is developed by Princeton review, a company that helps students getting admitted to University and to pass their exams. Their career finder test is meant for everyone but I think it would best fit students to choose their University career. If you are looking for the best career aptitude test for high school students, this is probably it!

How does the Princeton review career quiz work?

The quiz is based on multiple questions and it only takes a few minutes to finish it. At each question you will be presented with multiple choices and you will have to select which of the options you will like the most. The Princeton review career will use this information to understand what your preferences are. Sometimes you might have to choose between two options that you both like. Do not worry about it, this is part of the algorithm that the quiz is using to understand your interests. Just choose the option that you prefer and you are good to go!

At the end of the quiz you will be asked to provide some personal information and your email address. Note that your results will be visible immediately after filling in your email address, so you do not necessarily need to use your real email address. However, I used my real email address and they did not spam me with advertisements, so there is nothing to worry about when filling in your email address (consider opening a new free Gmail address to register to new website and avoid advertisement coming to your main email address)

Interpret the results of the Princeton review career quiz

After finishing the quiz, you will be presented with the results. The results are divided into two tabs, Quiz Results and Recommended Careers.

In the Quiz results tab, your “interest” and your “style” will be categorized in colors. Each color represents a different style and interest.

Your interest is defined as following:

“Interests” describe the types of activities that you are drawn to; these will need to be present in a job or career that you are considering if you are to stay motivated. It is important to note that interest in an activity does not necessarily indicate skill.

Your Style is defined as following:

“Style” describes the strengths that you could bring to a work environment when you are at your best. This is the way you like to get results. A work environment in which your strengths are appreciated is a big part of career satisfaction.

The result of the quiz will be your “Style” and “Interests” colours. Each colour has a specific meaning. You will be able to read this in the Quiz result tab.

You can find careers that fit your colours in the “Recommended Careers” tab. There you will find a list of jobs that fit your interests and styles. You can click on each of them to see the description of the job. This can be really useful for teens to decide which major to do in college or a career test for college students to decide their next step.

Given the current situation on the job market, you should really consider getting a technical job. Here are the job descriptions of technical jobs offering some of the best work conditions: Chemical Engineer, Software Engineer and Software Developer

Although the Princeton review career quiz can also be a good career test for adults, I think the Myers Briggs career test and the Holland career quiz are better options for adults. Let’s take a look why.

Myers Briggs career test

The Myers Briggs career test is a career exploration test based on the Myers and Briggs model. In this model, people are divided into 16 different distinctive personalities called MBTI types. Each of these 16 personalities is described by 4 letters.

In each question in the test, you will be presented with two alternatives

The original version of the test is called MBTI and it is owned by MBTI online. The original test costs $49.95, this is quite a lot! Fortunately there are a lot of other good free Myers Briggs career tests. The original test costs a lot, but it also offers a very complete report. However, I would recommend using a free Myers Briggs career test, unless you really want to spend fifty bucks on it! My recommendation is actually to use a free Myers Briggs career test to find your four letters personality type and then go to the official website to get the report for your personality type

As previously said, the first step for taking  the free Myers Briggs career test is to use a free website to get the 4 letters describing your personality type. As the Myers Briggs model is available for free online, a lot of websites developed free alternatives. I would recommend the career assessment quiz from HumanMetrics to get your four letter type. This test is really easy to do, you will just have to answer 60 questions (yes, you need quite some questions to create an accurate career test) and you will get your letter type.

Once you have your letter type, you just need to go to the official website of MBTI online, click the menu button on the top right of the screen, select MBTI Types and choose your own type.

MBTI types

This will bring you to the overview page describing your type. On this page, you will find a description of your character, how you deal with stress and relationships and in which environment you can perform at your best. On this page, you will also find some good tips on possible career patterns and which jobs would fit you best.

If this information is not enough for you, you can find a lot of information online about your personality type. For example, you can also find a nice description in the 16personalities website

Another good option to take a free Myers Briggs career test is Truity TypeFinder quiz. This is a great job aptitude test to get a good free report with information about your personality type and which jobs would fit you. Truity also offers the opportunity to pay to get a complete report. However, the free report already offers good insights and job advice!

Myers Briggs, one of the best career test for adults and students

If you are looking for the best career test for adults, a personality career test based on the Myers Briggs model is surely a great option. In fact, many major companies use this accurate career test during their hiring process.

Holland career test

The Holland career test is a career path test that has the goal of identifying which career path suits your interests the most. The theoretical framework of this career assessment quiz is the “Holland codes”. This is a way to identify people’s interests to address them to a suitable career. In my opinion, the Holland career test is a great career quiz for teens and students that want to find which way they want to continue with their studies. Of course, this can also be a good career quiz for adults, but I believe it would work the best with people at an early career stage.

Free Holland career test online

The Holland career test is a career assessment quiz based on the Holland Occupational Themes (RIASEC). This is a theoretical model that categorizes people in two dimensions: Things vs People and Data vs Idea. This career quiz determines which jobs would fit you based on how your personality positions in these two dimensions. The Holland career test is universally recognised as one of the best career quizzes and I would recommend anyone trying to discover his/her strengths to try this test. OK, enough theory, where can i find a free version of the Holland career quiz?

As for the other best free career test I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of different websites offering free and paid versions of this quiz. I tried quite a lot of the available tests and I would recommend the Truity Holland code career test. The free version already offers quite a complete result report, so again no real need to pay for the full version!

How to use career quizzes to help you choosing your major

Career exploration tests can be really useful tools to help you in choosing your major. The main reason for this is that you have to choose your major before you can actually try a job. Many people choose the wrong major just because they do not really know which jobs would fit them. Your teachers will do their best to help you out, but many times they are also quite far from the job market.

Many other people make their choice based on people in their environment just because they are not aware of which other jobs are available out there. How many times do we see children doing the same job as their parents? This is not necessarily something wrong, but it is surely wrong if the reason for this choice is not knowing any alternatives!

A career test for teens can be a great opportunity to discover a universe of job opportunities. As all the three career quizzes I presented in this article are really good for people choosing their major, I would recommend teens to perform all these three tests (Princeton review, Myers Briggs and Holland career test).

After completing these tests, print all the three results and read them accurately. Note down the job recommendations from the tests and start searching which studies will fit these career paths. Also notice that each quiz result will recommend you jobs at different levels. Consider your ambitions, opportunities and interest to select suitable jobs. Once you have a list of interesting jobs, you can go to Career Explorer to find a clear description of each job. On Career Explorer you will also find which degree and education level is needed for different professions!

How to use career quizzes to help you choosing a job

Job aptitude tests can be a very useful tool to help adults in choosing their next career step. Too many people just jump to the first job they find after finishing their education. A career quiz for adults can be a powerful tool to help you choose a career that fits your interests. Of the three quizzes I presented above, only the Mayers Briggs and the Holland quizzes are actually good career tests for adults. So I would recommend anyone to perform these two career assessment quizzes to get valuable insights on their next career steps.

The verdict
